Twice a Day, Just Like Mom

Most of us consider our companion animals as family members, therefore their physical and mental well-being should be a life-long priority. Both humans and their pets are happiest and healthiest when following a holistic, proactive lifestyle, rather than one that reactively rushes to drugs or surgery after a serious problem has already occurred. Holistic means that various lifestyle components are addressed together—synergistically—and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This is an Ark Naturals core philosophy: we strive to provide you a scientifically-based product line that is not only a problem solver, but also a problem preventer.

Let me give you a great example: Periodontal disease is the most common companion animal disease; 80% of dogs and cats have it by age four. It begins with gingivitis, an inflammation of the gum tissue near the tooth base related to the build-up of dental plaque (tartar) on the tooth surface. Plaque-causing bacteria secrete enzymes which irritate the gum tissue. In the next few years, tartar builds up and becomes mineralized; if dental cleaning is not performed, the animal can develop an active infection of the tissue supporting the teeth, causing pain and inflammation. Abscesses and ulcers in the mouth; swollen gums, and loose, broken, decaying and cracked teeth occur. Eating—typically the highlight of an animal’s day—has been turned into a painful experience.

In the wild canines and felines catch prey and chew entire carcasses. Bones are crunched immediately and cached for later gnawing. Teeth are also scraped by tough hides, feathers, tendons, cartilage and other connective tissue. Like it or not, companion animals that hunt keep their teeth cleaner. If this is not an option, then you must replicate a daily tooth scraping.

Most dogs enjoy a fresh bone slice filled with marrow, which is excellent on occasion but not every day. Also, bones may not be acceptable for aging, sensitive, or toy dogs, and pets that already have loose teeth. Ark Naturals Brushless Toothpaste and Gray Muzzle Brushless Toothpaste are bone substitutes that effectively clean teeth and are the obvious solution. However, when paired with three Ark other products, you gain the power to actually prevent periodontal disease and defer aging. What’s more, our holistic approach supports dental health in cats, who will rarely accept dental chews or tooth brushing.

  1. Providing connective tissue, bone and joint support for the animal’s life not only defers arthritic, lumbar, and cruciate ligament disease, but also helps strengthen the jaw ligaments and tooth sockets. Start young animals on 1/3 or ½ doses of Joint Rescue or Sea Mobility for life, increasing to full dosage by 8 years.
  1. Omega mender essential fatty acid supplements are key to oral and overall health. Research shows that Omega-3 fatty acids are highly antinflammatory for gum tissue, and even more importantly, are crucial nutrients to support the specialized cells that secrete bone. Any sort of bone or tooth maintenance or repair requires EPA and DHA. So again, I recommend using Omega Mender a few times weekly for life. You’ll see a gorgeous coat as well! Another tip: Omega Mender contains natural vitamin D from fish. Just like us, dogs and cats need Vitamin D for bone and joint support as well as dozens of immune and metabolic processes. Research shows that Vitamin D deficiency is a directly linked to periodontal disease. However our furry friends don’t make much vitamin D from sun exposure; they rely mainly on foods. Commercial pet food always has Vitamin D added, or contains some from fish or organ meats, but it may not be enough for all breeds or conditions; and those who make up their own pet rations may fully neglect this crucial nutrient. Make sure to add Omega Mender and some oily fish to the diet several times weekly.
  1. Breathless Plaque Zapper is an enzyme-based powder you mix in fresh drinking water to help keep plaque-causing bacteria from adhering to teeth. It’s colorless, odorless, and tasteless, and is the easiest way to prevent gingival inflammation and bad breath.

There are many more health and nutrition aspects that these products address, but this should be enough to convince you to be proactive and provide your companion with as many years of youthful vigor as you can.
